Club Notes: 17th June 2018

Brilliant Tennis Open Week

The Dove Hill Irish Design Senior Tennis Open Week, was a brilliant success this year, we had a great entry of 220, spread over 27 competitions to suit all grades. Thanks to all the local clubs in particular, Larkspur, Castleview, Kilfeacle, New Inn, we also had good contingents from Kilkenny, St Anne's, Nenagh, and Causeway. The prizes were well spread over the various clubs, at the presentation; Tournament Director Declan Tarrant thanked all for participating and for the great Hillview support, in tournament running and catering, in helping ensure the week was a success.

Former champion Brian Reidy, Kilkenny reclaimed the Div.1 title beating the upcoming Peter Baker, from Castleview in a hard hitting final.  Peter was also runner up in the mixed doubles 1, which was won by the Cashel pair Moss Ahern and Katie Morrissey. Katie had another success winning the ladies div 1 against her club mate Anna Downey.  Moss also teamed up with Gavin Ahern to win the men's div 1 doubles. Nenagh also did well with Tara Spain winning 2 titles. Former Hillview player Emma Smith, now in Kilkenny, had a double winning the Div. 3 ladies and mixed titles. Hillview duo Eugene O'Mahoney and Declan Tarrant were successful in the Div. 2 doubles. Michael Prendergast won the Div. 3 doubles with Declan Webster. Aidan Barry was runner up for the second week in a row in the Div. 3 singles.  Laura Durkan was runner up with Claire Dawson in the ladies Div. 2, Cora Morrissey was runner up in ladies singles 3.

In the lower divisions, there were many popular victories from Castleview, Larkspur, New Inn and Kilfeckle combinations. In the Div. 6 men's, there was a titanic struggle between 2 prominent Hillview badminton players Joseph Kiely and Richard Madden, before Richard prevailed 13 to 11 in a tie break.

It's a busy time on the tennis circuit, congratulations to David Hannon who is continuing his good form of recent years with a win in the Div. 1 in Causeway, Dungarvan. Also former Ballybacon hurler Eugene O'Mahoney who won the Div. 2 singles. We were unlucky not to do the hat trick in singles titles, as all round sportsman Aidan Barry was runner up in the Div. 3 final. We had a share in the ladies doubles Div. 2, when Aine Lonergan paired up with Theresa Keating, Kilfecle against another Kilfecle pairing Jacinta Coman and Claire Dawson.

Pitch and Putt

Congratulations to John Fitzgerald on winning the County Tipperary Strokeplay Competition which was held in Tipperary Hills. John had a great score of 19 under to pip club colleague James Cleary on 18 under to the title. It's great to see a club stalwart getting a reward for his dedication. James will be off to Spain, Bilbao this week representing Ireland.
